Mirkmere
Deep in the Huntingdonshire fen north of Huntingdon town is a fenland "island" raised above the marshes somewhat like the Isle of Ely but less well visited. Dragging itself reluctantly into the modern age, the Town Council requested the Mirkmere Historical and Natural Philiosophy Society (MHNPS) to create a website that would tell the world that we exist ... this, for better or for worse, is it. It will undoubtedly be an eclectic hodge-podge of arcane information rather than a sleek and efficient piece of internet magic but if you wander the by-ways we have created you will discover something about our small community and maybe will feel an urge to visit some day - heaven knows, we need the business.
Mirkmere offers the visitor a quite, calm experience away from both the hurly and the burly of daily life, comfortable accomodations, the best beers in England from Fuddles Brewery and some unique traditions, premier amnongst which are the traditional dances of the Mirkmere Morris. Come and stay awhile.
The MHNPS
Our Society was founded during the Victorian period by a group of local worthies interested in discussing and studying local history and natural philiosophy during a time that preceded any communications faster than a slow postal delivery by horseback. We have been supported over the years by several generous benefactors, chief amongst whome are the Grimleys of Mirkmere Hall and the Fuddle family of brewers. We thank them for their continuing support in this new and exciting venture.
